In the bustling city of Dinoburg, Velociraptor was a sneaky resident known for its swift movements and cunning behavior. Imagine the quickest kid on the playground – that’s what Velociraptor was like among dinosaurs. They were feathered creatures, much like birds today. In fact, they’re often described as bird-like dinosaurs, not just because of their feathers but also because of their agile bodies and sharp minds. These dinosaurs once roamed what we now know as Mongolia and China. If Dinoburg were to have a map, Velociraptor’s house would be in the region marked «Asia». Living around 75 million years ago, Velociraptor wasn’t the only dinosaur in town. They had to watch out for larger predators like the Tarbosaurus, which was kind of like the neighborhood bully.

Scientists think Velociraptors might have hunted in packs. So, think of them as close-knit soccer teams, working together to outsmart and chase down their prey. Communication was likely a big part of their strategy. Their sharp, retractable claw on the second toe was like a secret weapon, probably used to pin down prey.

Velociraptor stood at about 1.6 feet tall, which is roughly the height of a big stack of school books. From its nose to the tip of its tail, it was about 6.8 feet long — imagine lining up three adult bicycles end-to-end. They weighed around 33 pounds, which is like carrying around a heavy backpack filled with books.

Now, you might’ve heard of the T-Rex, one of the most popular dinosaurs. Compared to the mighty T-Rex, which was as heavy as an elephant, Velociraptor was much, much smaller. It’s like comparing a cat to a lion! But what our Velociraptor lacked in size, it made up for in speed, dashing around at speeds of up to 24 miles per hour. That’s as fast as a person on a bicycle racing downhill!

Even if you hadn’t taken a trip to Dinoburg, you might recognize the Velociraptor from movies and books. They became super famous after the «Jurassic Park» movies, although the ones in the movies were much larger than the real Velociraptors. In the films, the Velociraptors were more similar in size to their cousin, the Deinonychus. So, Hollywood took a little artistic license there!

Not only were they fast on their feet, but Velociraptors were also smart cookies. Some scientists believe they were among the smartest dinosaurs. And remember those feathers we talked about? Well, Velociraptors didn’t fly, but those feathers might have been used for display, to keep warm, or even to help steer when running at high speeds.

Lastly, one super cool fact is that we’ve found fossils of Velociraptors in mid-hunt! There’s a famous fossil where a Velociraptor is frozen in time, battling a Protoceratops. Talk about a snapshot from a day in the life of Dinoburg! So, the next time you hear a story from Dinoburg, keep an eye out for Velociraptor, the city’s swift and clever resident!
